For over 20 years Sabahar, has operated as a woman-owned Fair Trade business based in Ethiopia. Our vision is to preserve ancient weaving and spinning traditions and contribute to Ethiopia’s development by providing reliable employment and equitable pay for hundreds of artisans. Sabahar focuses on consistent quality, authentic production and intentional design using only natural fibers and using environmentally friendly practices. Our product range includes household items such as kitchen, bath and resort towels; table linens such as placemats, napkins and runners; blankets, throws and pillows; as well as silk, cotton and linen shawls and scarves. We currently export to more than 50 companies in 19 countries. We welcome custom design and mainly do white label exports.

  • Sustainability Role in overall company's strategic plans
    Sustainability is addressed by Sabahar in 2 ways. Firstly, we ensure all our production practices have no negative environmental impact. Secondly, our mission is to ensure the handweaving sector itself is sustainble. This means we ensure our artisans have sustainable livelihoods, and we support and initiative policy change within the country for recognition of the needs and rights of the hand weaving sector.
    Sustainability initiatives
    We only use natural fibers, 85% of which are sources from Ethiopia. We have a waste water treatment system so clean the water used for dyeing so it can be reused, we have a biogas system to generate fuel for dyeing, and we produce functional products from all textile wastes such as scraps of fabric and yarn.
    Pledges for the year
    We working with a number of local organizations to obtain GOTS certified cotton from Ethiopia within the next 2 years.
    Social equity at your company
    We have a very active health and safety committee which conducts training and ensures our working environment meets all standards, we have a social fund to support selected needy community members with cash 2-3 times/year, we have a grievance committee to hear and deal with any employee issues, we do a living wage survey every 1-2 years to understand costs of living and to ensure our salaries are above this amount, all staff have medical coverage plus access to interest free loans, and 60% of our leadership is female.
